In 1728, Cupertino Joseph was ordained as a priest and was seen able to rise from the ground and float at the times of prayer and mass. He was hailed by the people as the flying saint. Later, he was canonized in 1767 and became the patron saint of pilots, aircrews, air travelers, and astronauts. Known as a visionary thinker, Bishop C.M.Viswasam later planned to set up a college managed by Jesuit priests in the new church to be built. Fr. Maria Anthony's, who stayed at the shrine of St. Joseph at Singanallur, and his efforts, a barbed wire fence was erected to clear the vacant lot, which was heavily overgrown with brambles, and remove the encroachers. In the place thus prepared, a thatched shed was erected. He was a district official in Kovilpalayam. With the advice and help of a relative, documents such as maps and estimates were formally prepared, and after permission was obtained, Fr.Maria Anthony, started to build a Church.
In between this the Bishop C.M. Viswasam The rule of faith is called Ad Limina. Every five years, each bishop would go to meet the Pope to participate in the exchange of their diocesan messages and to complete the church before his return. But, unexpectedly, Bishop died of a heart attack while abroad. The church was consecrated on 17.11.1979 by Reverend Anthony Lawrence, the then Diocesan Head Priest (Vicar). In the morning at Singanallur and in the evening at this church, the parish priest performed Mass.In 1987, Fr. John Bosco, who took over as the parish priest of Ondiputhur St.Joseph's Church, replaced the dilapidated old church and built a new church nearby with the permission of most Reverend Ambrose. He changed the name to St. Sebastian's Church. On 22.04.1990, Venerable Bishop Ambrose inaugurated the second church. However, the worship of Saint Cupertino Joseph continued unabated. A large number of students came from many places every Wednesday in search of this church and participated in the Novena and prayed.
Rev. Fr.Lazar Sundar, who was working at St. Joseph's Matriculation School, Ondipudur, visited the place for a long time and took care of the spiritual needs of the people. Collecting money from people little by little, he built a Church house. Later this Church was raised to stock in 2007. Fr. C. S. Madalaimuthu, renovated the staff house in this church. The minister was the first parish priest of the church. Fr.John Bosco took charge and fulfilled the spiritual duties of the people. After that, Fr. Alexander, who took responsibility as a partner, took many efforts to build a new church. On 13.01.2013, the foundation stone of the new church was laid by His Excellency most.Rev. Dr. L. Fr. Joseph Sudhakar took charge as a parish priest in June 2013. Due to his tireless efforts, more than 450 families are present in this section. Due to the presence of many educational institutes, small and large industries, hospitals with high-quality facilities, and numerous restaurants in the area, many people from different parts of Tamil Nadu and other states come here for study and employment. Due to the fact that many apartment buildings are coming up in the vicinity of the parish and low-cost rental apartments are being built, the number of people coming to these Church areas from the outer parts of Coimbatore is increasing day by day. Many patients of various faiths who are admitted to big hospitals near the church come here in critical condition and pray and get cured and become witnesses to the Lord. Many students from outside towns who stay in the hostels of the college institutions visit this church every day to pray. Therefore, due to the lack of capacity of this church, a new modern church with a 10,000-square-foot area was planned by Fr. Joseph Sudhakar, and on 13.12.2015, the work was started with the blessing of His Excellency Rev. Dr. L. Thomas Aquinas; a grand new church with many beautiful works and 34,000 square feet of paver block, land renovation works, etc., were completed, and the new church was consecrated on 19.01.2019 by His Excellency most.Rev.
